THE HISTORY OF ST. STEPHEN’S WIMBERLEY

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church moved to its current property in Wimberley in the early 1970s. The beautiful mission chapel and grounds, completed in 1976, were designed as a replica of San Francisco de la Espada in San Antonio. Over the years, the parish expanded, adding a parish hall and a log cabin. During a study of the parish's goals, the idea for a school for young children emerged, and the process of making it a reality began.

With the support and funding from the Burdine Johnson Foundation, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School officially opened its doors in September of 1989. Several clergy, including Bishop Earl McArthur, The Rev. Ted Hervey, The Rev. Phil Parham, The Rev. Ted Knies, The Rev. George "Mac" Keeble, The Rev. Dr. Patrick Gahan, The Rev. Sandra Casey-Martus, and the current Rector The Rev. Kevin Schubert have contributed to this ministry of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

In 2016, St. Stephen’s School received a significant bequest from the Estate of Kathryn Hildreth Delcher, a passionate supporter of education. In honor of her impactful gift, the main hall was named the Kay Delcher Education Hall during a special ceremony.

In August 2024, St. Stephen's further expanded its facilities with the completion of a state-of-the-art multipurpose field, providing a new space for physical education, athletics, and community events.

Today, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School offers classes for children from 18 months through Eighth Grade. Through the vision and dedication of the church and school community, we continue to provide exceptional educational opportunities for families in Wimberley and the surrounding areas who choose St. Stephen’s.
